As a major actor in internet governance in Cameroon, AfroLeadership took part in the multi-stakeholder consultation meeting on threats to the internet in Cameroon at the Mirador Hotel on 27 November 2024. The meeting brought together the cream of the various actors working in the digital sector in Cameroon: representatives of public administrations (MINPOSTEL, ART, ANTIC, etc.), representatives of the private and semi-public sector (CAMTEL) and representatives of CSOs. The meeting aimed to discuss the major issues holding back the emergence of an equitable, inclusive and accessible internet at low cost to boost our country’s development. The meeting also gave an opportunity for stakeholders to present the actions undertaken to promote the digital sector in Cameroon. While MINPOSTEL focuses on the development of policies relating to the promotion of digital technology in Cameroon, ANTIC is involved in the strategy to combat threats to Cameroon, while CAMTEL is the technical arm of the administration in the maintenance of fibre optics in Cameroon, and the management and distribution of bandwidth and Internet connections to operators and individuals. Finally, the ART ensures that infrastructure is acquired in accordance with internationally recognised standards and norms, while keeping a close eye on the specifications and commitments of operators in the digital sector. Alongside the institutional actors, civil society organisations are carrying out studies, building platforms for opening up public data, and above all supporting the government in raising awareness, training the public and advocating responsible use of the Internet in Cameroon.
After a full day of discussions, the working session ended to the general satisfaction of all the participants, who made strong recommendations to the public administration in the sector to improve Internet governance in Cameroon.
